About those mobile graphics predictions - games like The Dark Meadow can't come soon enough

NVIDIA

Earlier, Phil talked a bit about the way mobile graphics are inching their way up towards full-blown console performance. NVIDIA, who is entrenched in gaming and graphic performance on all fronts, at their a little shin-dig in Seattle really wanted to wow us with numbers and slides and predictions. That's all well and good, but if you're like me, the talking only makes you want to see the product and evaluate it against all the hype.

I'll let others hash out the strengths and weaknesses of mobile gaming in relation to PC and console gaming. I'm that guy who bought Skyrim for the PC, but never had a chance to install it and play it yet. I also won't have time to fool with the Diablo III open beta this weekend. But I do have time to play games on my tablet, and I don't want to waste it playing crappy ones. Make it better, do it as fast as you can, and keep folks like me, who would rather play great games on a small screen while kicked back in a La-Z-Boy, all happy inside. That's why the thing I found most exciting about yesterday's little get together was the mention of two new Tegra Games -- Bounty Arms by Kerosene Games and The Dark Meadow from Phosphor studios. Seeing new titles optimized for the Tegra 3 gets me a little tingly, so I poked around the Internet a bit and found that Bounty Arms comes from the same developers who brought us BladeSlinger (which kicks a serious amount of ass), and a short preview of the THD optimized version of The Dark Meadow. These can't come soon enough. Hit the break to see the trailer and I think you'll agree.

PlayStation Suite SDK open beta begins

Android Central

As promised, Sony has launched the public beta of its PlayStation Suite SDK, following on from the closed beta that's been available to select developers in the US, UK and Japan since last November. The program, which is available online now at playstation.com/pss, allows game developers to create games and apps optimized for the recently-launched PlayStation Vita handheld console, as well as PlayStation-certified Android devices. (These include the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Sony Tablets P and S, and others.)

The open beta available free of charge to all developers, but after the beta period's up Sony plans on charging a $99 annual fee for access to the finalized SDK. It's also worth mentioning that any games created using the beta SDK won't be available until after the open beta wraps up, though devs are free to test and debug their creations during the beta period.

Interested developers can sign up over at the source link -- here's hoping the project results in some great titles for Sony's line-up of Android phones and tablets.

'Arrested Development' To Premiere Entire Season Four At Once

Netflix's Ted Sarandos confirms all 10 episodes will air on a single day in 2013.

Yes, "Arrested Development" fans, you read that correctly. When the Bluth family returns to the small screen for the long-awaited fourth season, they'll occupy your attention for quite a few hours.

Vulture reports that at a Netflix-sponsored event in Vegas, the movie website's chief, Ted Sarandos, confirmed all 10 episodes single day in will air on a 2013. We expect the world to go into hibernation.

When MTV News spoke to Michael Cera about the Bluth family reunion earlier this year, we asked him when production is set to start. "I've heard summer," the actor said. "So hopefully that's going to happen."

Looks like Cera heard correctly. The show's creator, Mitch Hurwitz, was also in attendance at the Netflix event and confirmed the time frame. But to make the news even more exciting, he also passed along a little episode information. While he initially planned each episode to revolve around a specific character, the creator says: "That is now kind of evolving into becoming more like the old show again."

Because the season will premiere all at once, Hurwitz wants to take advantage of the unique release and likes the idea of modifying the show's original format. "There's something exciting about trying to break the form again," he told reporters.

So, what does the revival hold for the characters? When we caught up with Alia Shawkat and asked her about Maeby's future, she had some ideas.

"She'd be my age [by now]," 23-year-old Shawkat said. "She probably wouldn't go to college. She's probably figured out some weird schemes to get money really fast, and she probably has a buzzed head and is dating some French painter."

But note: the French painter is not going to be George Michael in a fedora working on a paint-by-numbers. "[It] feels kind of creepy. I love [Cera], but the whole first-cousin thing..."

Either way, we're sure the writers will come up with more exciting and insane ways to give us the Bluth family antics we know and love. And when the season finally does arrive, we'll be on the couch all day.

Are you excited for season four of "Arrested Development"? Let us know in the comments!

Tammy Lynn Michaels on Spousal Support: A Matter of Gay Rights!

Yes, Tammy Lynn Michaels is demanding more money from ex Melissa Etheridge. She does not believe that $23,000 per month is sufficient spousal/child support.

But Michaels says in a new interview this is not because she's greedy. It's because the singer allegedly makes $178,000 per month and it's a question of math, fairness and gay rights.

Tammy Lynn Michaels and Melissa Etheridge

"It's the law," Michaels tells After Ellen. "When we were together, there were a lot of things said and shared between us. And a lot of things were promised. I'm standing here saying: "You wanted to fight for gay rights; you wanted everything to be fair. You wanted to stand up for all of us? Because now I'm an 'us,' the gays that wanted to have gay rights and equality and not look like dip s--ts."

It is true that, under California law, a wife would be entitled to 50% of her ex-husband's income upon divorce.

Does Tammy Lee see a reconciliation for her and Etheridge? She says the former couple actually does get along well at times already, typically when their children are involved.

"Melissa and I have a great face-to-face, direct relationship when it comes to the kids. We both want what we think is best."

Elusive particle may have been found

An elusive particle that is its own antiparticle may have been found, and, if confirmed, would be the first time a phenomenon predicted decades ago has been seen in a real system.

Some researchers suggest that in the future, this mysterious particle called a Majorana fermion could be useful in carrying bits of information in quantum computers.

In a paper published in the journal Science Thursday, Vincent Mourikand Leo P. Kouwenhoven said they were able to make the Majorana fermions appear by exposing a small circuit to a magnetic field.

Until now, the only suggestion of the particle's existence was a theory posed by Italian physicist Ettore Majorana in 1937, who predicted the Majorana fermion. [ Infographic: Nature's Tiniest Particles Dissected ]

While the evidence is strong, there are still more experiments to do to confirm the finding. But that may be fitting: Majorana himself was, by many accounts, a brilliant physicist. (He was the first to propose a theoretical basis for the existence of neutrons.) But in 1938, he took a boat trip from Naples to Palermo and disappeared. His body was never found, and the circumstances of his disappearance have remained mysterious.?

Wacky particles
Elementary particles come in two types: fermions and bosons. Fermions are particles such as electrons, leptons and quarks (which themselves make up protons and neutrons). Fermions make up matter and obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle, which says two particles can't be in the same quatum state at the same time. (This is why two protons or neutrons, for instance, can't be in the same place at once). Bosons are things such as photons and W particles, which carry forces.

Majorana fermions are so special because they are different from other fermions, which have antiparticles ? particles that have the same mass but opposite charge. An electron is negatively charged, and its antiparticle is a positron. When a particle such as an electron comes into contact with its antiparticle (in this case, a positron), the two annihilate, turning into energetic photons in this example.

Bosons, however, are particles that are their own antiparticle, and they don't annihilate when they touch each other. Majorana fermions are like photons in that respect, as they act as their own antiparticles. But unlike photons, Majoranas will still annihilate when they meet their antimatter cousins. (Neutrinos may also be like this, but it is not clear yet and is an active area of research).

In addition, unlike more conventional particles, Majoranas are "quasiparticles," which arise from the collective properties of a material. This happens in more ordinary areas as well; for example, in solid-state electronics, electrons carry negative charges, while they leave behind "holes" with a positive charge; these holes behave just like real particles, even though they appear only because of the behavior of electrons.

    2. Is 4-year-old as smart as Einstein? Not quite yet
    3. Elusive particle may have been found
    4. Simple nests of apes are feats of engineering

Making Majoranas
To try to create the mysterious particles, the team set up an experiment that involved the collective behavior of particles. For the experiment, they used nanowires, which are able to produce such quasiparticles when they are placed under the influence of a magnetic field. The results showed a tell-tale sign of the Majorana particles having been produced ? a certain peak in conductivity.

While it isn't a definite find, Kouwenhoven said he thinks the evidence is pretty strong. That's partly because he gave a talk at the American Physical Society meeting in February, where he said he might have found the Majoranas. Since then, and in response to a lot of questions from others in the field, he came up with several tests to make sure he got it right.

If the finding is confirmed, Majoranas offer an easier way of storing information in quantum computers, which currently rely on atoms; these atoms become unstable with even a small disturbance, while Majoranas would be much easier to keep stable.

How To Make More Money With Paid Online Surveys | Online ...

?

Many people have seen success with taking paid online surveys. Some use them as a method to make a secondary income while in the comfort of their own home. These people typically just seek enough to pay one bill or put gas in the car. Others that work from home may utilize this revenue stream as an additional technique for earning cash on the internet. If there have been people struggling with making enough money to warrant the time spent on this route, the following tips should help. There are a few tips and tricks that can help anyone make more money from internet surveys.

One of the most effective ways of making more money with surveys is to sign up with as many companies as you can. Some have found that certain survey providers only give them one or two per month. This few is likely to be unhelpful for those wishing to make serious money by taking surveys. Making a required payout may not be possible for a few months with so little work. However, registering for many companies almost ensures more opportunities, which leads to more cash. Having multiple opportunities can make up for the sites that only supply a handful of surveys every month.

Another tip for making more with paid online surveys is to set up an email account dedicated to taking surveys. This will prevent an overflowing inbox within a personal email account. If one signs up with many survey opportunities, it?s likely they will see many emails from these companies every single day. Having an account solely for this task also prevents emails from being looked over or accidentally deleted when trying to sort through personal email. Folders should be set up so the user can keep opportunities from various sites separated and to remove any clutter from the inbox.

When filling out the registration forms for surveys, be sure to fill them in completely and honestly. Many surveys are awarded to users based on demographics, whether it be age, gender, marital status, location, or household income. Providing accurate details will help to ensure more survey opportunities. Many companies also have preliminary questionnaires that are used to learn more about their members. These are helpful to make more money, as they allow a better chance at getting matched with the best surveys available. Anyone serious about earning money with surveys should give companies the most information about themselves as possible for the best response with opportunities.

Taking surveys on the internet has become a popular way to earn extra cash. it is not difficult to provide opinions and previous experiences, and the idea of getting paid for it is a nice bonus. Simply working with multiple companies may be enough to get one the boost they want in regards to survey income. However, incorporating the rest of these suggestions will make it even easier to earn money with this type of income stream. Making money online isn?t difficult, and a nice side income can be earned with surveys that one is paid to complete.

Specific inhibition of autophagy may represent a new concept for treatment of kidney cancer

Specific inhibition of autophagy may represent a new concept for treatment of kidney cancer

Monday, April 16, 2012

New research at the University of Cincinnati (UC) suggests that kidney cancer growth depends on autophagy, a complex process that can provide cells with nutrients from intracellular sources. Researchers say in certain circumstances autophagy can protect tumor cells from chemotherapy, allowing them to survive for long periods of time in a hidden, dormant, metastatic state.

In this newly published data, researchers identify two distinct autophagy regulated pathways downstream from the von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor gene, or VHL. This specific tumor suppressor is lost in the majority of renal cell carcinomas.

UC researchers report these findings in the April 16, 2012, issue of Cancer Cell.

Maria Czyzyk-Krzeska, MD, PHD, corresponding author of the study, says the discoveries could guide researchers to more effective treatment approaches for kidney cancer, particularly metastatic disease, based on knowledge of these specific autophagic processes. UC collaborators in this study include David Plas, PhD, assistant professor of cancer and cell biology, and Jarek Meller, PhD, associate professor of environmental health.

"VHL has emerged as a master controller of access to intracellular nutrients through autophagy and to extracellular nutrients through formation of blood vessels. Our work shows that there are different autophagic programs?pro-and anti-oncogenic. Drugs that inhibit the final stages of autophagy non-specifically, such as derivatives of chloroquine, may not be as beneficial as hoped," explains Czyzyk-Krzeska, a professor of cancer and cell biology at the UC College of Medicine and researcher with the UC Cancer Institute.

She says the challenge is to understand the molecular mechanisms of these diverse autophagic pathways and identify targets that are specific to the pro-oncogenic pathway but not affecting tumor-suppressing pathways.

"Current drugs for metastatic kidney cancer target angiogenesis?blocking the formation of blood vessels that feed the tumor?but they typically only increase survival by a matter of months," says Czyzyk-Krzeska. "We hope this new body of evidence can help pave a new path to more effective treatment options for this disease."

According to the American Cancer Society, incidence rates of kidney cancer are increasing steadily by 2 to 3 percent each year. The disease is curable when it is identified early and isolated to the kidney. Treatment options for metastatic disease are limited.
