"I have a feeling my issue is unique and probably due to some piece of software I installed. I use a MacBook Pro pre-unibody 15" and OSX 10.8.1. I cannot say for sure when this started. I use 'tap-tap' to start applications and activate it with three presses of the aka apple key. Recently, after two taps a large red target with three or four rings around a bullseye will speed across the screen to highlight the cursor. Can anyone identify the source of this mostly annoying behavior? (Only rarely does it seem potentially helpful!) Sometimes tap-tap does not appear immediately, but may delay 10-20 seconds since upgrading to 10.8.1."?MacInTouch?10:15 AM

I'm just wondering about length of time needed to build spacecraft. Is there a possibility of trying to develop full-on robot automated manufacturing of spacecraft to try and reduce cost and increase speed of manufacture? Or is it just that the current combination of no money up front, pushing the envelope, and needing human brainpower for testing and imagining failure modes? Are there any parts of spacecraft these days that are assembled robotically or is it 100% bespoke? Which is still cool but not space operaish yet. You see automated manufacturing attached to automated mining and supply lines means we can set up a remote site on the Moon or Mars.
Excepting very few use cases, most spacecraft are bespoke because each mission is different. There are very few times when a spacecraft is constructed en masse - basically the same spacecraft churned out in multiple copies, and even then the number tends to be extremely limited (usually below 10), so setting up assembly lines doesn't generally justify the overhead.
Now, there are efforts to componentize spacecraft so building one is basically like snapping together Lego. Including having flight software automatically reconfigure itself to handle those blocks like modern OSes do when you plug in USB devices.
The main problem is that it's extremely expensive to launch spacecraft - easily $1B per launch. Neverminding the large fraction that don't make it at all. As such, equipment sent up there has to put up with some of the worst scenarios in the world - little projectiles whizzing along and handling all the damage it causes, limited weight (too heavy and it costs way more $$$), the fact that there's no way to practically repair it (very few get the Hubble treatment), and that it has to last many years (because you don't want to launch its replacement and spend another billion soon aferwards)
When you've got billion(s) on the line, spending a few years ensuring that failures are minimized and tolerated is just part of the game. Cube sats and such only have to last a few weeks - which is a much easier thing to do than making one last at least a decade or more.

Close the mouth of the dog and breathe deeply into the dog?s mouth. The breaths administered should inflate the lungs and make the chest move. CPR must be administered if the dog has no pulse or if the heart is not beating. For every ten heart massage two rescue breathing must be given to the unconscious dog. CPR must be continued while the pet is being transported to a veterinary facility.

US and European activists insisted Tuesday on making a new attempt to go to Palestinian territories, two days after Israel and Jordan barred them from entering the West Bank to deliver aid to students.
"We are thinking of going in December to the Palestinian areas to break the siege on them," Olivia Zemor, spokeswoman for the "Welcome to Palestine" group, told a news conference in Amman.
"We still do not know for sure if we want to go to Gaza this time or another place. It depends on whether the (Egyptian-controlled) Rafah crossing will be open or not."
Israeli and Jordanian authorities on Sunday prevented the group of 100 activists from going to the West Bank through Allenby Bridge border crossing for delivering a tonne of school stationary to Palestinian students.
Their first bus was allowed by the Jordanian authorities but the Israelis turned them back. The second bus was prevented from crossing by the Jordanians at the request of the Israeli authorities.
"I think it is unfortunate that one of the two buses was prevented by Jordan at the request of Israel," Zemor said.
"We do not understand, and I think the Jordanian government should consider that Israel is not a respectable state because it does not respect international laws."
Jordan and Israeli signed a peace treaty in 1994.
"I think the Palestinians are being imprisoned, tortured and killed because there is cooperation between Israel and our countries," said Zemor, who heads CAPJPO-Europalestine, a French NGO seeking to help end the occupation of the Palestinian territories.
"If you in Jordan accept and approve such cooperation, then our mission will be extremely difficult."
Zemor said the campaigners from France, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and the United States will deliver their supplies on Wednesday to Palestinian children in the Jerash refugee camp, north of the capital Amman.
They plan on Thursday to hold separate demonstrations outside the French and Israeli embassies.
"We want to tell the Israelis they are occupiers and terrorists who keep terrorising Palestinians and anybody who wants to support them," Zemor said.
"At the same time, we want to show the French government how shocked we are that it did not protest or make any statement against what the Israelis did."
The campaigners say their mission comes after an invitation by Bethlehem governor Abdel-Fatah Hamayel.
They tried to go to Israel in July 2011 and April 2012, but the authorities at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport denied them entry.

With weeks still left in the summer melt season, the Arctic Ocean?s floating skin of ice has already shrunk to a record minimum.
As of August 26, Arctic sea ice covered 4.10 million square kilometers ? 70,000 square kilometers below the previous satellite-era record from 2007, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.
?The ice cover is now just so thin and weak in the springtime that large parts of it can?t survive the melt season,? says NSIDC director Mark Serreze.
Arctic sea ice grows in winter and melts partly away each summer. Overall, more sea ice has been lost each year as temperatures rise. From 1979 to 2011, the amount of sea ice left in September at the end of each melt season dropped by an average of 12 percent per decade.
The ice isn?t just shrinking; it?s also thinning. The Arctic used to contain lots of thick ice ? some ?3 to 4 meters thick ? that survived year after year. Now it?s dominated by thinner ice only 1 to 2 meters thick and just one to two summers old. ?It?s almost like parts of the Arctic have become a giant slushee at this time of year,? says Walt Meier, a sea ice expert at NSIDC.
In 2007, the previous record year, winds, cloud cover and other weather conditions were just right for a lot of ice to melt away. ?There were a number of people saying [2007] was a one-off and you?ll never see this perfect storm again,? says Serreze. ?What Mother Nature is telling us is that you don?t need a perfect storm anymore, just because the ice is so thin now.?
This year, ice cover stayed pretty much on track with 2007 levels through July, after which it rapidly nose-dived. One possible factor was a strong Arctic storm that spun up north of Alaska in early August,. around the same time a lot of ice melted out from the East Siberian Sea.
Serreze and others say it?s too early to know how the storm might have been related to the sea ice loss ? whether the storm broke ice apart and made it more susceptible to melting, or whether the two events just happened to coincide. ?My gut feeling is that it was probably not critical and we would have reached a new record regardless,? says James Screen, a climate scientist at the University of Melbourne in Australia who has studied the role of Arctic storms in sea ice loss.
Nevertheless, says Meier, storms that thicker sea ice might once have weathered now rank a knockout punch for thin, rotten ice. ?The Arctic is becoming like a fighter with a glass jaw,? he says.
The six lowest sea-ice extents in the satellite record have now occurred in the last six years, according to the NSIDC. More melt means more open water exposed to sunlight; that water absorbs more heat and causes feedback loops that heat the Arctic even more.
For now, though, cooler temperatures are returning, and the sea ice should stop melting and begin refreezing by around mid-September. How much more ice gets lost between now and then ?all depends on atmospheric conditions,? says Claire Parkinson, a sea ice expert at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
But this year?s small lingering ice pack probably means less ice next spring. ?It sets us up for another world of hurt next year,? says Serreze.
